Experience Hannibal, MO from this historic home built in 1844

Hannibal, Missouri, United States

Wake up and take your coffee out to relax on the same veranda that Molly Brown (the “Unsinkable”) enjoyed when visiting her sister while watching the mighty Mississippi roll by. Built in 1844 by the first Judge in the territory, , Molly was headed to this house when the Titanic sank. Enjoy the original hardwood floors in the dining room, marked by embers of fires used to cook countless family meals under the hearth. Walk to all the downtown attractions, nightlife and festivals. brbrI am available from 8 am through around 9 pm 7 days a week. I do my best to respond within minutes. Occasionally, it takes longer.brbrWhile the downtown area is within walking distance of the home, the home sits uphill from the shops. Walking downtown is easy enough, but you might regret the decision while going uphill on the return trip. :-)brbrThe entire property is for your use.brbrThis historic home includes 2 bedrooms upstairs, one in the basement and a pull-out couch in the living room. The couch is the only bed on the main floor. There is a full kitchen with basic tools and supplies and a dining room. One full bath including a tub/shower upstairs and one half bath on the main level. You will love the outdoor spaces - two covered porches with loveseats and a table and chair set for dining. The home is only a few blocks up the hill from downtown - an easy walk unless you have health or mobility issues. Downtown has lots of parking! brbrEnjoy the original hardwood floors in the dining room, marked by embers of fires used to cook countless family meals above the hearth. Walk to all the downtown attractions, nightlife, and festivals. You are close enough to hear the calliope music from the Mark Twain Riverboat! Not a history buff Enjoy the simplicity of old, coupled with wholly refreshed modern conveniences - ready for extended stays if you are in town for longer periods – a weekend, a month, or more!brbrPlease note - Evidence of damage due to significant construction materials, abrasives, or fabric, e.g., excessive mud, sheetrock dust, concrete dust, asphalt, shingle particles, cement, tar, oil or other materials that cause excessive wear, scratches, or cleaning of floors or carpet are subject to a $500 additional cleaning/ remediation fee. Unfortunately, due to damage from past guests, we remind that this home may not be appropriate for groups who do not exercise moderate levels of self-cleaning during their stay.

Charming 3-bedroom house with WiFi and AC in Hannibal

Hannibal, Missouri, United States

Our home has been extensively renovated in the last year. We have completely gutted and remodeled the Kitchen and 2.5 bathrooms, retaining only one cast iron tub and one sink. Floor boards from the bathrooms were repurposed to make the trim for the new bead board. All new electric and plumbing have been installed throughout the home. The 150 year old pine floors have been refinished and original trim, doors and hardware through out the house have been restored. Brick that enclosed flus for the woodstoves that used to heat the house has been exposed. Antique chandeliers, some that were converted from gas to electric, have been restored to their former brilliance. Due to the deteriorated state of the windows new energy efficient windows have been installed throughout. Our Italianate house was built in 1869 by Judge John B Helm for his daughter-in-law Kate Helm and his grandchildren across the street from his home. Kate was widowed with five young children when her husband Cyrus Helm (age 41) died suddenly of Typhoid fever. The Italianate style of architecture was very popular in the US from 1840 to 1890. British architect John Nash began the style having been inspired by the height, grandeur and artistic detail of renaissance architecture in Florence Italy. Judge Helm was a productive real estate developer and was responsible for the construction of 80 buildings in Hannibal. He was also the Judge of the Court of Common Pleas.  Before moving to Hannibal with his second wife, Mary, Judge Helm owned a general store in Elizabethtown Kentucky where Nancy and the young Abraham Lincoln were patrons of his store.  When visiting Hannibal on a presidential campaign stop, Abraham Lincoln met with Judge Helm and other leaders of the community. He declared that “Judge Helm was the first man I knew who wore store bought clothes all week, and as a boy, it was my greatest ambition to reach his station in society.” br
